The Betrayal of Ninjuu

“La traïció de Ninjuu”, by Mallorcan author Toni Cortés, is a well-balanced and carefully structured fantasy novel that reads with surprising fluency. The plot takes us into a feudal world where magic reigns and mages belong to the dominant social class. Suquitó, a boy from a humble rural family with a special talent for spells, is forced to enter the Academy of Sorcery, which sets the story in motion. There he meets Näàn, a servant girl with burned skin, with whom he uncovers the dark link between magic and dragons.
Although some compare it to “Harry Potter”, the novel is closer in spirit to “The Name of the Wind”, while maintaining its own original voice. On the other hand, the story is self-contained, which could be seen as a drawback (it leaves you wanting more). Overall, Cortés builds a rich world with a strong narrative pace and engaging characters.
The cover, illustrated by Ciruelo Cabral, features dragons in motion and suits the book’s atmosphere perfectly.
